Westmorland Falls walk track
This short walk (approx 2 hours return) is currently, and undeservedly, neglected in most publications about the Great Western Tiers and Mole Creek. Once featured in the Lonely Planet guide, the Westmorland Falls Track has fallen somewhat into disrepair in recent years - and off the tourist map.
However, there has been some work undertaken to upgrade the track, which is now on target to become a more widely recognized and visited attraction of the Mole Creek area. Right now, you can enjoy it and be virtually assured that you will have it all to yourselves.
This description of the track is borrowed from Gerry Duke (www.touringtasmania.info) –
"The track is most amazing with forests of silver-barked dogwood rising out of an area of sinkholes near the start of the walk then on to the tallest of ferns and trees reaching skyward from the depths of a most exquisite rainforest. The track then follows the stream most of the way, crossing it in a number of places. It is a true gem of a walk.
Upon discovering a number of very pretty cascades we might have thought that we had reached our destination, but we continued on a little further before it was apparent that we had found Westmoreland Falls. A tall magnificent cascade that we looked up at in absolute wonder.
The area might better be named 'The Westmorland Cascades'. There are several smaller cascades in and around the falls. A superb grotto of small streams, falls and pristine forest."
Along the way, as you walk beside the creek, you will see the old flume (pictured right) which was constructed to feed water into the nine foot ditch, dug by convicts in the mid 1800s, to supply water to the Wesleydale estate some miles away.
The walk is one hour each way on a well-marked track. A relatively easy walk for the moderately fit, although the path crosses the creek several times via improvised crossings, needing a certain amount of dexterity when conditions are wet and slippery.
How to get there
Please note, there are no signposts leading to the track, so you will need to follow these directions.
The track starts towards the end of Wet Cave Road. Coming from the village of Mole Creek, travel about 6 km along Caveside Road to a T-junction. Go right into Wet Cave Road, which is unsealed. The Wet Cave reserve is soon reached straight ahead and you take the left turn and continue past the last farm on the right (a deer farm, recognizable by its fencing). There is a small car park on the right with a sign 'Mole Creek Karst Conservation Area', and large rocks each side of the track entrance.
